As per a Monday report from Bloomberg, Apple is said to be weighing the option of leveraging AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic to power the revamped version of its virtual assistant, Siri—departing from the idea of solely relying on in-house built technology.

Bloomberg’s sources indicate that the iPhone manufacturer is still advancing an internal initiative known as “LLM Siri,” which utilizes AI models created within the company. That said, Apple has reportedly reached out to both OpenAI and Anthropic, requesting them to develop tailored iterations of their AI models. These customized models are intended to operate on Apple’s own cloud infrastructure, primarily for testing purposes.

Notably, Apple had previously planned to roll out an AI-enhanced version of Siri in 2025. However, the company encountered a string of technical hurdles, leading to a delay. The updated timeline now suggests the launch could take place in 2026 or even later. This setback might not be an isolated incident; over the past few years, Apple has been gradually falling behind competitors like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the fast-evolving AI landscape.

It’s worth mentioning that Siri already has the capability to tap into ChatGPT when tackling complex queries. But Apple’s current exploration points to a far more profound integration with AI technologies from these third-party providers, signaling a potential shift in the company’s AI strategy for its flagship virtual assistant
